Market day

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.

S for Science

T for Technology

E for Engineering

A for the Arts

and M for Maths

Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.

Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because we worked more as a team and our table actually worked the second time much better then the first time  Technology template

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.

How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was making the baths bombs and stress balls with Maia because I think we worked really well as a team making them.

Next time I would make more stress balls because we ran out of them very fast.

St Felicity of Rome

St Felicity of Rome

Felicitas of Rome, also anglicized as Felicity, is a saint numbered among the Christian martyrs. Apart from her name, the only thing known for certain about this martyr is that she was buried in the Cemetery of Maximus, on the Via Salaria on a 23 November.

Feast Day: March 7

With details concerning the lives of many early martyrs unclear and
often based on legend,
we are
fortunate to have the actual record of the courage of Perpetua
and Felicity from the hand of Perpetua herself, her teacher Saturus,
and others who knew them.
This account, known as "The Passion of St. Perpetua, St. Felicitas,
and their Companions," was so popular in the early centuries that it was
read during liturgies.

The year 203, Vivia Perpetua, a well-educated noblewoman, made the decision to follow the path of her mother and become a Christian, although she knew it could mean her death during the persecutions ordered by the Emperor Severus. Her surviving brother (another brother had died when he was seven) followed her leadership and became a catechumen as well, meaning he would receive instruction from a Catechist in the Catholic Christian faith and be prepared for Baptism.

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;

What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas.
Culture is Holidays like Christmas, Easter and Halloween. And it's also about dance and food.

Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage.
I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.

In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we
concentrated on Maori legends.
I read maui and the sun and maui and the big fish in reading time.
I wrote the legend of how the parrot got his colours.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains.
Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork,
some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with
dance and drama.

Reflection

I contributed by dancing and doing the poi.

I think the show might impact on others by teaching them about how we can share stories in a fun way.

What I learned about working with others is that if we work together we can make a really cool dance.

Swimming lessons 2018

For the past two weeks we have been doing swimming lessons at Graham Condon. For the first week we did freestyle, breaststroke backstroke. Then on the second week we did the same for the first 3 days then on the last two day we did water safety. One the first day of water safety we did life jackets then on the second day we went in this big boat and and got this rope that had a bag at the end and we had to throw it at our partner in the pool and pull them into safety. Whats your favourite type of swimming to do?
